譯文： Chengyu, or Chinese idioms are a unique type of expressions in Chinese, most of which consist of four characters. Even though they are highly compact with fixed structures, they often represent profound meanings vividly. Chengyu are mostly derived from ancient Chinese literature and are often linked with certain myths, legends and historical events. If not knowing where a chengyu originates from, one will find it difficult to understand its actual meaning. Therefore, learning chengyu can help people better understand traditional Chinese culture. Chengyu are widely used in daily conversations and literature works. Proper use of them can make a person’s language more expressive and communicate more effectively.

中國幅員遼闊，人口眾多，很多地方人們都說自己的方言。方言在發音上差別最大，詞匯和語法差別較小。有些方言，特別是北方和南方的方言，差異很大，以至于說不同方言的人常常很難聽懂彼此的講話。方言被認為是當地文化的一個組成部分，但近年來能說方言的人數不斷減少。為了鼓勵人們更多說本地方言，一些地方政府已經采取措施，如在學校開設方言課，在廣播和電視上播放方言節目，以期保存本地的文化遺產。（188字/5句話）

譯文：China is a country with a vast territory and a large population. People in many places speak their own dialects. Dialects have the biggest difference in pronunciation and the difference between vocabulary and grammar is relatively slight. For some dialects, especially those from the north and the ones from the south, they are so different that their speakers often find it extremely hard to understand each other. Although dialects are considered as a component of the local culture, the number of people who can speak dialects keep declining in recent years. In order to encourage people to use dialects more often, some local governments have taken measures, such as offering dialect lessons in schools and broadcasting dialect programmes, on TV or radio to preserve the local culture heritage.

漢語是世界上用作本族語人數最多的語言。漢語與西方語言的一個重要區別在于它是以方塊字(character) 而不是以字母構成的。目前仍在使用的書寫系統中，漢語是最古老的。在中國，來自不同地區的人可能聽不懂對方的方言，但由于漢字有統一的書寫形式，他們交流起來幾乎沒有任何困難。漢語歷史上對團結中華民族發揮了重要作用。今天，隨著中國經濟的快速增長和全球影響力的增強，越來越多其他的人也開始學習漢語。

譯文：The Chinese language is used as the mother tongue by the greatest number of people in the world. One of the significant differences between Chinese and Western languages lies in its composition of characters instead of letters. Although people from different parts of China may not understand each other's dialect, they have no difficulty in communicating simply because there exists a unified writing form for Chinese characters. Chinese played a very important role in the unification of the Chinese  nation. Today, with China's rapid  economic growth and increasing global influence, more and more foreign people begin to study Chinese.
