Passage One

One day, when I was a resident in training at the old Children’s Hospital of Denver, I was working overnight in the emergency department.Around two in the morning, a family brought their child in to be seen. Before going into the room, I looked at the chart and saw that the chief concern was “Fever in a five-year-old”.At two in the morning? I wondered.I opened the door to find three generations of Greek Americans: the grandfather with his arms crossed, his severe gaze, and his scary white walrus moustache; the father, with his arms crossed, his hostile gaze, and his scary black walrus moustache; and a grandmother and mother who were quietly weeping. And then there was the patient, the precious child, the five-year-old first son of a first son. While his family glared or wept, the boy was tearing around the room, opening up drawers, pulling out gowns, scattering stuff all over the place.Sick? This child? Two in the morning? I tried to get a history, but the family was hostile.I tried to examine the child, but he kicked and struggled.None of the adults were prepared to help me.After an hour of this nonsense, I had “had it”, and I left the room frustrated and steaming.

I went back to the nursing station and looked at the cover sheet to find out the name of this devil child’s pediatrician. It was my hero. So, at three in the morning I gave him a telephone call.He was very nice to me at such an ungodly hour.I explained the situation, complained about the hostility of the adults, suggested that this boy was about as sick as I was, bemoaned (抱怨) the hour and the waste of “my precious time”, and finally closed with what was, for me, an uncharacteristic outburst: “I know this boy is your patient, but I’m going to murder these people!”

And he listened. He listened. Then there was a long pause, and finally he said: “You’re right.Anyone can take care of the easy families.” And he hung up.

I learned the lesson.

61.The child was brought in ________.

A.at the wrong time

B.for an unclear case

C.as an emergency patient

D.for immediate resuscitation

62.Before entering the room, what was the resident wondering about concerning the patient?

A.His ethnicity.

B.His temperature.

C.Time of his visit.

D.His chief complaint.

63.What can be inferred from the description of the three generations of Greek Americans?

A.They made a scene.

B.They remained cooperative.

C.They were difficult to handle.

D.They belonged to the lower class.

64.From the ungodly time of making a telephone call to the uncharacteristic outburst, the resident tried to tell us that he ________.

A.had every reason to complain

B.was not responsible for the malpractice

C.was sick and tired of striving to be a hero

D.had attended to the child patient independently

65.What does the resident most probably mean when he says that he learned the lesson?

A.He could have taken the case seriously.

B.He ought to respect heroes in medicine.

D.He needs to learn to handle difficult situation.
